About the Organizers
This course is proudly brought to you through a dynamic partnership between Naturland Philippines, the Philippine Coffee Board Inc., and Tuburan Coffee, combining global organic standards with local production expertise. Together, we are bridging the gap between international certification and sustainable grassroots cultivation to put premium, eco-friendly Philippine coffee on the world map.
Naturland is one of the major international associations for organic agriculture worldwide. Naturland membership comprises 114,000 producers worldwide. They are farmers, beekeepers, aquaculture practitioners, and fishers in over 68 countries who produce food in accordance with Naturland internationally recognized standards, farming around 780,000 hectares of land. Organic, social, and fair: these three pillars of sustainability are the foundation of Naturland’s holistic approach.
The Philippine Coffee Board Inc. is a private sector-led group established in May 2002 as the National Coffee Development Board. The goal of the PCBI is to develop and promote the Philippine coffee industry through technical assistance and credit programs for coffee farms; and through marketing and promotions of coffee for domestic and export markets. Research/training, certification and credit programs are carried out in partnership with government agencies, cooperatives, foundations, NGOs, as well as regional and international partner organizations.
Tuburan Coffee is a community-based coffee enterprise established in 2012 in Tuburan, Cebu, under the leadership of former Mayor Democrito “Aljun” Diamante. 🌱 Why Choose Organic Coffee Production?
Going organic has become an absolute imperative as the real-world threats of climate change intensify on the ground. For years, the skyrocketing prices of chemical inputs have drained farmers of the vital financial resources they need to adapt to changing weather patterns. Simultaneously, the Philippines has been losing significant amounts of its fertile topsoil, rendering many traditional farms unproductive. Left unchecked, this degradation poses severe long-term consequences—not just for individual farmer livelihoods, but for the Philippines’ overall food security.
Transitioning to organic practices is the most resilient way forward, especially for high-value crops like coffee. On the bright side, this shift aligns perfectly with market rewards: consumers and coffee retailers are increasingly demanding sustainable production. Recent surveys show that modern consumers are not only seeking out eco-friendly brands but are actively willing to pay a premium price for coffee that is certified organically grown.
🌿 The Power of Shaded Agroforestry
As one of the world’s most vital and heavily traded tropical commodities, coffee naturally originates as a forest understory shrub. Embracing this native trait through agroforestry systems is one of the most powerful ways to maximize agricultural yield on limited land, drive climate change adaptation, and strengthen local food security.
Ecological & Soil Health Benefits Shaded agroforestry systems actively shield coffee crops by naturally suppressing pests and diseases, enhancing soil fertility, and preventing erosion. Shade trees continuously contribute leaf litter and root mass—delivering organic fertilization, maintaining a healthy humus balance, and significantly reducing soil moisture evaporation.
Diversified Income & Food Security Beyond sustainable coffee, agroforestry directly empowers farming communities. By integrating diverse tree species, farmers enjoy a rich harvest of bananas, citrus, avocado, medicinal plants, firewood, and timber. Introducing varied cover crops (such as soya, mung beans, and pumpkins) or intercropping with banana and Calliandra shrubs offers farming families both a nutrient-rich diet and diversified, resilient income streams throughout the year.
A Shield Against Climate Change Traditional full-sun monocropping is increasingly vulnerable to climate change, directly threatening grower revenues through unpredictable yields. Shading offers a proven climate adaptation strategy. Proper canopy cover buffers temperature extremes, blocks excessive solar radiation, reduces erosion, and improves rainwater infiltration—ultimately securing a higher-quality harvest.
